If you run a Shopify store and someone tells you to “get a CRM,” the advice is usually unhelpful. Most CRMs are built for sales teams tracking deals. You don’t have deals — you have browsers, repeat buyers, and a list that needs the right email at the right moment.

We’ve run our store on a mix of tools, and the honest answer is: for most Shopify stores, “the best CRM” is an email/automation platform with real customer data — not a sales-team CRM. This guide breaks down the actual options and who each one fits.

TL;DR — what to use

  • Most stores: an email-native platform that doubles as your CRM — Klaviyo (data-rich) or Omnisend (balanced). They already know your customers’ order history and behavior.
  • You sell B2B, or have a real sales pipeline: HubSpot earns its price — but it’s heavier and pricier than most product stores need.
  • Tiny list, just getting started: Shopify’s native customer segments + Shopify Email may be enough for a while (we reviewed Shopify Email here).
  • Still picking the email tool itself? Start with our Klaviyo vs Omnisend vs Mailchimp comparison.

What “CRM” means for a Shopify store

Strip away the jargon. For you, a CRM needs to do three things:

  1. Know the customer — order history, lifetime value, what they browsed, whether they opened your last email.
  2. Let you act on that — segment, trigger a flow, suppress a group.
  3. Not cost more than the revenue it drives.

That’s why generic CRMs often disappoint Shopify merchants: they’re great at “who’s my contact at Acme Corp” and weak at “this person viewed a $40 leash three times and abandoned cart.” The tools that win are the ones wired into Shopify’s event stream.

The three camps

Camp 1 — Email-native platforms that are also your CRM

Klaviyo and Omnisend are the default picks, and for good reason. They ingest Shopify order and event data automatically, so “the CRM” is just a side effect of running your email.

  • Klaviyo — deepest customer data (event-based profiles), best for stores that segment hard. Our full Klaviyo review covers the pricing reality.
  • Omnisend — same idea, gentler learning curve and friendlier early pricing. See the Omnisend review.

For the majority of product stores, this camp is the right answer. You get CRM capability without buying a separate system.

Camp 2 — General-purpose CRMs (HubSpot)

HubSpot is the name people mean when they say “CRM.” It’s powerful: deals, pipelines, forms, a free tier that’s genuinely usable, and solid Shopify integration via its app.

Where it fits:

  • B2B or wholesale arms of your store
  • A real sales team following up on quotes
  • You want one system for marketing + sales + service

Where it hurts:

  • It’s a different mental model from Klaviyo — you’re managing contacts and pipelines, not just flows.
  • Paid tiers climb fast; Marketing Hub pricing is steeper than most email tools.
  • For pure “send the right email to the right buyer,” Klaviyo/Omnisend do it with less overhead.

Bottom line: if your store has a sales motion (not just a checkout), HubSpot is worth a look. If you just need to email buyers intelligently, Camp 1 wins.

Camp 3 — Native Shopify (segments + Shopify Email)

Shopify itself gives you customer segments (filter by behavior, LTV, location) and Shopify Email (native campaigns). For a new store with a small list, this can cover the basics.

The limitation: segments are static-ish and the automation is thin compared to Klaviyo’s event flows. It’s a starting point, not a destination. Our Shopify Email review shows exactly where it stops being enough.

How to pick (by store profile)

Pick an email-native CRM (Klaviyo/Omnisend) if you…

  • Sell primarily DTC with a list you want to automate
  • Want CRM data to be automatic, not manually entered
  • Aren’t running a sales team

Pick HubSpot if you…

  • Have wholesale/B2B or a quote-based motion
  • Need marketing + sales + service in one system
  • Can absorb a higher platform cost

Stay native (Shopify segments + Shopify Email) if you…

  • Are early, small, and want $0 until revenue justifies a tool
  • Send mostly campaigns, light automation

What we’d actually do in 2026

We’d start on Omnisend (or Klaviyo if data depth matters), treat it as the CRM by default, and only add HubSpot if a B2B motion appears. We would not buy a separate sales CRM just to “have a CRM” — that’s the expensive way to solve a problem Shopify already feeds your email tool.

The trap: people buy HubSpot because the word “CRM” feels like something serious businesses own. For a Shopify store, the smarter CRM is usually the one already reading your order data.
