Best Email Marketing Tools for Shopify in 2026: A Hands-On Comparison
We tested the leading Shopify email and SMS tools side by side — Klaviyo, Omnisend, ActiveCampaign, Mailchimp, and Postscript — and ranked them by what actually matters to store owners.

Most “best email marketing for Shopify” lists are affiliate farms. We did something different: we spun up real stores, imported the same 500-contact list, and rebuilt the same three flows (welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase) in each tool. Here’s what we learned.
The short answer
- Best all-rounder for growing stores: Klaviyo — if you can stomach the price creep (see our pricing update tracker).
- Best value for small stores: Omnisend — cheaper at low volumes, strong automation, decent deliverability.
- Best if email is just one channel: ActiveCampaign — only if you also need CRM/segmentation depth.
- Best free tier: Mailchimp — but the Shopify integration is weaker and automations get expensive fast.
- Best for SMS-first: Postscript — pair it with Klaviyo or Omnisend for email.
How we tested
We evaluated five dimensions that actually move revenue for a Shopify store:
| Tool | Flow builder | Deliverability | Shopify data sync | Price at 5k contacts | Learning curve |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Klaviyo | Excellent | Strong | Deepest | ~$80/mo | Moderate |
| Omnisend | Strong | Strong | Strong | ~$32/mo | Easy |
| ActiveCampaign | Excellent | Strong | Good (via app) | ~$49/mo | Steep |
| Mailchimp | Good | Variable | Basic | ~$70/mo | Easy |
| Postscript | SMS-only | n/a | Good | Pay-per-SMS | Easy |
What “deep Shopify sync” actually buys you
This is the part most reviews skip. Klaviyo and Omnisend pull event-level data — not just “subscribed” but “viewed product X, added to cart, didn’t purchase.” That lets you build a “browsed but didn’t buy” flow that recovers high-intent carts without spamming everyone.
Mailchimp’s Shopify app, by contrast, syncs orders and basic fields but is weaker on real-time events. If you’re running a serious abandoned-cart program, that gap matters more than the $10/mo you save.
Our recommendation by store stage
- Just launched (< 1,000 contacts): Start on Omnisend or Mailchimp free tier. Don’t over-engineer.
- Scaling (1k–10k): Klaviyo becomes worth it once you have enough event data to segment. See our Klaviyo deep dive.
- SMS is core to your strategy: Add Postscript and keep email on Klaviyo/Omnisend.
