Klaviyo Review 2026: Pricing, Features, and Is It Worth It for Small Shopify Stores

A hands-on Klaviyo review based on rebuilding real automations for a Shopify store — covering pricing reality, the event-data advantage, and who should skip it.

Klaviyo

Klaviyo is the default recommendation for Shopify email — and for mid-size stores, usually correctly. But after rebuilding our store’s entire automation stack in Klaviyo, we have a more nuanced take, especially for smaller stores watching costs.

What Klaviyo does better than everyone else

The core advantage is event data. When a shopper browses a product, Klaviyo records it as a trackable event you can branch on. That sounds technical, but the practical result is flows like:

  • “Viewed product but didn’t add to cart” → nudge with social proof
  • “Added to cart, abandoned” → time-decaying discount
  • “Purchased, browsed category X” → cross-sell the next logical product

No other Shopify-native tool gives you that depth out of the box. Omnisend gets close; Mailchimp doesn’t.

The pricing reality (read this before you sign up)

Klaviyo bills primarily on active profiles (contacts with any engagement in the last 180 days), not just list size. That’s fair — but it means a 5,000-contact list can cost ~$80/month, and a 10k list jumps to ~$150/month. They’ve also raised prices repeatedly; we track every move in our Klaviyo pricing update log.

Practical tip: prune inactive profiles quarterly. Every stale browser-cookie contact still counts toward your bill.

Who should use Klaviyo

  • Stores doing $20k+/month where segmentation drives real revenue
  • Teams comfortable in a moderately complex UI
  • Brands planning SMS (Klaviyo’s SMS is solid and shares the same flows)

Who should skip it

  • Brand-new stores under ~1,000 engaged contacts: start on Omnisend and migrate later. You won’t yet have enough event data to exploit Klaviyo’s edge, and you’ll pay more.
  • Stores that just want a newsletter: Klaviyo is overkill.

Verdict

Klaviyo earns its reputation for stores with enough data to segment. For everyone else, the price creep makes Omnisend the smarter starting point. Either way, build your flows around events, not just list blasts — that’s where the ROI is.
